About jackgordon.org Mr. Seattle |
|
|
I've created JackGordon.org as a tribute to my dad, Jack Gordon of Seattle. From the time he left the Navy after World War II until his retirement from active life in the mid-90s, Jack Gordon spent his time, energy, and efforts doing as much as he could for the betterment of his family and his community. There's a reason that he was "Mr. Seattle." You can't mention any aspect of Seattle civic life for 50 years without mentioning Jack. Whether it's a visit by a president, a foreign head of state, an astronaut, or a Hollywood star, an event, or a ceremony, Jack was involved, usually as chairman. For 50 years - Harry S Truman, Seafair, Century 21, John F.Kennedy, Seattle University, Greater Seattle, the Restaurant Association, Dwight Eisenhower, the Pilots and the Mariners, the Kingdome, The Hydro races on Lake Washington, welcoming returning Korean War Veterans like Ted Balestreri and Viet Nam War veterans, the Aqua Theatre (and Follies), Ronald Reagan, The Royal Visit to Seattle of the Japanese Crown Prince, Richard Nixon, the Seattle Center, Expo '74, Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo Astronauts, the National Governors' Conference, Jimmy Carter, the Royal Visit of Queen Elizabeth, and on and on. From the mid 40s till the mid 90s, if it happened in Seattle, Jack Gordon was involved. JackGordon.org will serve two purposes. As I said above, its prime purpose is a tribute to my dad, Jack Gordon a/k/a Mr. Seattle. Secondly I hope to preserve at least partially the memory of many people from the area who otherwise would have been forgotten. Many times when I've attempted to search for some of the people who are in these pictures, the only place they show up on the Internet is at this site. I've been able to get a lot of help from Jack Gordon, but as time passes and things recede into history, it gets tougher and tougher to identify the (for instance) 3 directors, 2 suppliers, and their wives seated at a banquet table during a 1965 dinner. Or name every person in a picture from Century 21 in 1962. I'm more than willing to accept comments, critiques, or especially identification of people or places. Simply give me a call or send me an email. I'm also willing to pass on almost any of the pictures that are here. If you're a child, a spouse, or even the person depicted, let me know and I'll do my best to get you the print. Even though we live in a 20,000 sq foot building including our business, I always seem to be running out of room and I'm more than happy to get rid of things to the right home.
